The production-linked incentive scheme earmarked ₹180 bn towards advanced cell chemistry, which aimed at bringing at least 50 gigawatts (GW) of lithium-ion batteries to the market. On 11 November 2020, the Government of India announced incentives worth ₹3 tn to encourage companies in ten sectors to boost local manufacturing and increase exports. Factors driving Li-ion innovation are battery life, energy density, safety, cost reduction, and charging speed. Most of these companies are partnered with car manufacturers to ensure a supply of Li-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. They manufacture Li-ion batteries for consumer and industrial purposes. Li-ion battery manufacturers are primarily based in Japan and China. Predominant chemistries are lithium cobalt oxide, which offers high energy density but can be dangerous if damaged. Li-ion battery chemistries are proprietary to their manufacturers. Alternatives such as advanced batteries and super capacitors cannot easily replace lithium-ion batteries due to their performance, cost, weight, and size. For example, Nissan’s lithium-ion battery technology allows a higher density of lithium ions to be stored which increases travel distance. Their compact size makes them preferable in the automotive industry. These batteries have a higher energy density compared to lead-acid or nickel-metal hydride batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of batteries used in modern electric vehicles. The higher the kW of the battery, the higher the range. They store the electricity required to run an EV. Batteries play an essential role in electric cars. These batteries are specifically designed for a high ampere-hour or kilowatt-hour capacity. They store the electricity in rechargeable batteries that power the electric motor, which turns the wheels.Įlectric vehicle batteries are usually rechargeable and are typically lithium-ion batteries. Electric cars function by plugging into a charge point and taking electricity from the grid. With the increase in fuel price, environmental changes, and road tax, people prefer opting for electric vehicles which cut fuel expenses and provide better acceleration compared to vehicles with a traditional fuel engine. Unfortunately, the transportation industry has often been despicable when it comes to energy consumption. From the days of horses and carriages to the bullet trains and airplanes of today, people have always come up with creative ways to get from one place to another.
